This was one of those books that has been on my to-read list for a while. Published over half a century ago in 1958, this classic book has truly made a name for itself. It is a book that has been selected to be part of the curriculum for children in schools across Africa and the US. In short, the story follows a man, Okonkwo, and chronicles his life in the pre-colonial years of the late 19th century in South-east Nigeria, up until the arrival of the Europeans and Christianity. This is a story that I have not yet read. I am part of a wonderful book club and this is a book that they had recently read before I joined. It is highly rated amongst the books that we have read and I can see why! In short, the story is about four brothers whose parents have high hopes for them growing to become respected professionals. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very good writing and a gripping story. The protagonist of the story is 17-year-old Moonbeam who is recently rescued from a lifetime in the confines of a religious cult compound in a remote area of Texas. I recently joined a social book club and our last book selected by the popularity vote was Iceberg Slim by Robert Beck, otherwise known as Iceberg Slim. It is the life story of Iceberg Slim, a prominent pimp in Chicago in the middle of the 20th century. The story is full of shocking realities of pimp culture in America at this time and we see that this lifestyle is not mutually exclusive with drugs and the prison system. There are so many themes to explore in this story, from family to colourism, the American judicial system, rehabilitation and the economy,…

Last week I celebrated my birthday on the beautiful island of Kos, Greece. Not just any birthday, it was my 25th birthday. That’s a quarter of century (makes me sound old)! I certainly look my age but sometimes I feel a lot younger on the inside. I can remember by thoughts as a teenager; what I thought my life should look like at 25. Because back then, 25 was a full fledged, grown, adult. And it is. But that is not synonymous with ‘put-together’, or ‘established’ and certainly not ‘perfect’. Being human and being perfect have to be polar opposites……
